My Hand on Your Stomach

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

When I placed my hand on your stomach
am I saying: in our footsteps
we leave behind the crumbs of our dreams?
or do I mean:
we leave behind what someone else
left for us? but sometimes
we leave our own tracks and

when you close your hand over mine
on your stomach
are you saying: listen, feel, read
the braille on my belly?
or do you mean:
what is this moving sidewalk
set in constant

motion? And if I say yes, yes my love
here we move at a pace unfamiliar
will that comfort you,
will that give you a rose to plant
for next May, when she
arrives?
