an accident on I-29

by Jared Fladeland

scrape
goes the brainmatter.
shovel up the shards of splintered sinew.

humble
are those who witness death first hand,
heroes of human life, separating here and the afterlife

those photographers with their clicking eyes
making symmetry and geometric balance,
always making memories of the images
you could only wish to forget.

I always say a silent prayer when I pass an accident on the interstate ~ especially when there are alot of bystanders/tv crews around.

Chilling, photographers with their clicking eyes, what a description. Goosebumps from this.

this old school mafia police photog, oui-ja (like "wee jee"), used to take these gruesome photos of crime scenes and it's rumored that he would reposition the corpses and the evidence to make better pictures before the cops would arrive on the scene. you have to wonder about the way that people absorb that gore and are able to function. it's their job. yet, you see some blood on the pavement and some broken limbs hanging out a car window from that side of the yellow tape and you change and you write a poem about it. (the best thing a poem can do is provoke notions and ideas. that's what you did for me here.)
