What makes the grass grow

by Chris D Lavigne

So what is it that makes the grass go?
there are many possibilities
which one is correct I really don’t know
But for now, I’ll tell you of one choice
so please listen to my story
a tale told by someone who has no voice
...
In a country torn by political and religious unrest
where children are born under the label of enemy
An enemy to those they have never even seen
or probably ever will
An enemy, to those on the other side of a border
which they never asked to be created
or were ever allowed to choose which side they could live beyond
And there are some children... who will never have a chance to ask why
...
From the mouths of babes
a soft gurgle, a coo, then silence
followed by a trickle of blood
Down the arm of her mother
Left wondering
how it was possible for her child
who was too young to have learned how to live
was old enough to learn how to die
Her Hope has been lost
... that was the name of her child
Hope...blessed by being born both deaf and blind
so as to never hear or see the atrocities humans are capable of
Human...the most advanced species
A species of cowards that finds power in the form of a gun
a weapon which requires little skill or intelligence to use
whose effectiveness at ending life makes it ever so alluring
But that’s not enough
so we create greater weapons
capable of killing many more people with much less quantity
which can be fired from a great distance
so they don’t have to see those they are about to kill
Because it’s so much easier to say that all one did was push a button
that admit the truth about what they had done
For when one never sees the fear in people’s eyes
never hears their painful cries
never feels the suffering from those who have died
and never has to answer the question why
Then I hope they can live with the fact that their life is a lie
Because they’re just following orders at the cost of their humanity
Using more inhumane weapons
Becoming evermore desensitized to death
As people become reduced to nothing more than
targets
statistics
acceptable losses
or casualties of war
And Hope has become a casualty of war
To those who will always claim victory
rather than claim responsibility for killing the innocent
all for someone’s “just cause”
Who fail to realize that when they kill hope
they kill the greatest weapon for survival that humanity could ever have
...
So does this provide a theory to answer my question?
For throughout history
there has been something which we have continuously spread over all the lands
for which we will never be able to cleanse our hands
And if the expression “God’s Green Earth” holds true
and if wars continue to soak soils through
As we watch our humanity reach brand new lows
Then perhaps it is blood
...that makes the grass grow
