9/11+5

by Charles M Harrison

It is here again
like a distant dream
A haunted memory
of a long ago scream.

So many innocent
living like you and I
None thought that day
it’s my time to die.

The wound’s still there
though it festers no more
It has not healed
that hallowed open sore.

The holes remain
and yet we endure
Not knowing
if our future is sure.

Five years now
we recall the day
Strong men wept
and knelt to pray

Now hear again
like a distant dream
A haunted memory
of a long ago scream.
