moon light

by Peter Humphreys

in the half light
or
maybe the moon’s
light
you lie prone
across the bed
hair awry
blinding
your
sleeping
eyes
that do not
see
your arm outstretched
almost
as if broken
but
moving
randomly
in dream
as if reaching for
one
who is not there
now
hand
no
finger tips
just
yes
just
touching the
floor
the nape
your back
damp with sweat
breasts flattened
on the sheets
crumpled
crumbling
crumby
indifferent
in different
times
I would have
lit a cigarette
and cursed
the moon
light
