mountain climbing

by Bet Yeldem

Attempting to scale Everest has left me weary, weak
And unable to breathe in the thin air of such heights.
My tracks have been lost in snows of moons past,
And another blinding sun is rising to greet me
As if to say the race is won; it welcomes me home
To that comfortable burn, red cheeks slapped
By warm rays and cold wind simultaneously,
A feeling as contradictory as your wink and smile.
You are the mountain and I am a lonely adventurer,
Trying to make a name for myself among the many
Who have come before, scavenging for survival
In remains of tangible traces they have behind. I find
This pack to much to bear, and in releasing the
Burden, I am at the mercy of Nature’s whims.
Give me a place to rest and find restoration
Before pushing me to the pinnacle of my tragic hope,
You, and the perilous journey that lies between
Me and the unknown landscape of your heart.
