what is "being left behind" in life?

by Jared Fladeland

hanging like a noose
on the dreams of absent reminders.

I saw her face
in the prism of afternoon raindrops.

if only fantasies
could pay the stack of mortuary bills.

maybe time
can save us from ourselves.

i've got words
but nothing scribbled on paper.

nothing
kills worse than string quartets in minor keys.

this is a really great form, the short lines followed by longer, cool rhythms. would be a great performance piece. each stanza could stand alone as its own poem. in terms of the flow/story from stanza to stanza, it goes very smoothly, until the last stanza, which i'm still trying to figure out. maybe the musical reference is a bit too obscure for me. perhaps with further contemplation, i'll figure it out...good fun to read again and again, appreciating all the nuances.
