dancers

by Peter Humphreys

beneath
the towers
they dance
in open
circles
rhythmic
rounds
linking arms
shoulder to
shoulder
forward
back
forward
back
different
people
different
music
dark
mysterious
joyous
strange
as the rain
pours down
its darkness
passing by
few stop or
tap their feet
yet
hand on hand
we step
the music
hand in hand
we staunch
defeat in
snow capped
mountains
vast windy
plains
on city streets
a moment
saved

as if startled
a little girl
in pink
dashes through
the melee of
legs
and claps
and spins
and laughs

Author's Note: Many "guest" workers came to Germany and other richer European countries from the south and east. Their culture remains alive but their position in their new "host" countries, where they have lived and worked for many years, remains unsure.
