the beauty is the first thing to cinder

by Vere Mantratriad

I thought, I think, I know
the fires you set, they were beautiful
but fire consumes all it touches and
my oxygen got burned up along with
every brain cell that might have
warned me to slow it down,
just slow it down some
and I’ve got a match
you’ve got the timber
if we could only make it to the light
but we never made it that far
and oh, it’s not fair what my mind does
when a glance translates to a kiss and
oh, what I wouldn’t do for a kiss these days
so you’ll keep your glances moving elsewhere
and I’ll keep my thoughts to myself
and we’ll both stay away from the flames
that others would find unbearably warm
but still we’ll stay cold where we’re both
untouchable and unsaid, unassuming and
un anything else.
