In the Cafe, Projecting

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

I'm watching the 5 year old
and her mother.
Can't help but insert my mother there
and I as the 5 year old.
How on earth did Mom handle the pressure?
That little girl idolizes her mother -
she who looks so healthy,
sweeping the girl's dark bangs
out of her eyes.
How is she to know?
How was I to know that twenty-two years later
I'd be faced with that sweeet-faced
woman's mortality
wndering if she'd be around to sweep
my daughter's dark hair out of her eyes,
helping her to see more clearly, as she did
for me?
