spume

by Peter Humphreys

easy come
and
easy go
for death
is such
twixt life
and scream
in cavernous
roaring
whole
as spume
flies out
cast forth
to fly
the people
herded
bludgeoned
crushed
await
their time
to die
Dun Briste
has seen
many
wrongs
but
none
as
wrong
as
this

Author's Note: On Downpatrick Head (or Dun Briste in Irish) there is a monument at the fearsome blowhole of Poll na Seantoine to those who suffered reprisals after the unsuccessful Rebellion of the United Irishmen in 1798. It is a gruesome spot in a place of outstanding, wild and dramatic beauty.

I really like this. The shortness of the lines drills home the horror of the event. And, of course, the concrete shape of the poem reflects the shape of the spume as it reaches skyward. Well done.

Well, you know my history there in that year....a little to the north a pike was waiting for Lord O'Neill. Great color here, Peter. Thanks.
