Weert

by Leonard M Hawkes

Knowing the emptiness
Or freedom and solitude
Of an evening alone
In the city:
Sticky from the heat,
Hungrily alone,
And savoring the appetite--
Knowing,
But miserably
Innocent.

Linden leaves
Against an indigo sky,
The yellow glare
Of street lamps,
Muffled voices,
The mixed smells
Of sweat and beer,
And thoughts of home.
