you smoke now

by Barbara Griffith

I sat at the barstool
and attempted to shrink
as low as possible
so that you would go away.

Casually poking at the cigarette
behind your ear, you ask
What's been new?
Haven't seen you in two years!

I sit quietly on my bar stool
hoping and waiting for you to
leave me alone...

After all these years of
you in my mind,
I just wish you and I
would never meet again.
