16. darkness

by Peter Humphreys

dark banks
of cloud
amass at
sea and
creep
into the
shore
where
memories
dark are
slow to
fade of
heroic
men sent
to their
graves and
prisons full
of those
bold enough
to argue
for dark
pasts live
within our
hearts to
fester quiet
and
clever
as monuments
now green
with mold
are polished
new as
metal

Author's Note: Any observant visitor to Lisbon cannot fail to notice that there are still abundant physical reminders of the dictatorial regime of Antonio de Oliviera Salazar (1889-1970).
