What I hate about open doors

by Maria Terezia Ferencz

You know what I hate about open doors?
When you open a door for one thing
Sometimes other things get in
that you never intended
Like a dead memory
caught on the heel
of someone beautiful
unintentionally tracked
across the once clean
floor of your soul
and no matter
how many times you scrub
at it, you can't get it
off
It stays there permanently
glaring at you
waiting to be
reborn
black
ugly
threatening
to come to life again
in your nightdreams
