Food for the family of a striking man

by Dave Fitzgerald

When I got home
I asked of my Mam,
"What's for tea?
Is it beef or lamb?"
She said,"You've the choice
of bread and iffit,
or if you prefer,
There's sugar and shit"
I went for the former,
The choice wasn't tough,
I knew for a fact we were out of sweet stuff.

This poem brought to mind Philip Levine's What Work Is - not because of any similarities in style, but because of the story Philip told, at a reading my husband and I attended, of the circumstances surrounding the writing of the poem. Excellent write.
