fog

by Peter Humphreys

dark of
night
and
dark of
moon
we came
away
so fast
too soon
cross fen
and bog
where
paths do
clog and
distant
church bells
toll
their
doom
we came
away
too soon
in secret
meetings
covered
barns
and hedges
dense we
hide
for gathering
gloom to
certain
doom
we
ride
we ride
the
fog

Author's Note: During the 1798 Rebellion which brought together Protestant, Catholic and Dissenter, Co. Wexford figured prominently as a centre of the uprising. Many songs were written of this time, including 'The Rising of the Moon'
