Our Independence Day

by Charles M Harrison

Raise the flag, strike up the band
Rockets red glare lights the grand stand

Celebrate and remember
cry tears of joy and sorrow.
For some gave up the future
so all could have tomorrow.

Streamers of red, white and blue fly
Jet’s leave their trails across the sky

All of the many people
who are free to live.
To busy to recall
what a few did give.

Parades pass to the drums beat
Revelers seek shelter from summer’s heat

Choose right or choose wrong
or what’s good or bad.
Some get to choose no more
for those we should be sad.

Burgers and fries, pies and more
From mountains, to plains and sea shore

This nation overflowing
filled with so much joy.
Yet there are empty hearts
in many a girl and boy.

Families gathered heads bowed to say
Bless all Americans, this lord we pray

Celebrate in joy, remember in sorrow
We are Americans it is our way.
It is how we honor ourselves
on our Independence Day.
