Temporal State of Mind

by Tracy Ellen

It is, as I am, the oldest woman alive
It is, as I am, the youngest woman to survive
It is neither here nor there
And yet it is ( but it isn’t) everywhere.
It did not exist in the beginning,
Though it is the beginning
and the end and the middle
It does not exist today, yet today it is.

Am I growing older?
Am I growing younger?
Can I rip this fabric asunder?
This temporal state of mind is not very kind
I cannot touch it as it touches me.

It is not a thing you can capture
It is not a thing you can set free
It is all that we are, derived by us,
for us, as we circle our star.

It is the measure by which we define our lives
The ball and chain, the joy and pain of us all.
And this is measured as the end
Or simply another opportunity to begin.
