A Definition: Father and Child

by Tracy Ellen

Those things that are my ways
Those moments which make my days
are the only true definition of me.

You are the cause of so many of my ways
You dominate so many of my days
that the line between you and I is blurred
and something in my broken heart is stirred
It’s coming alive, it’s breaking free
I fear it will change the very definition of me.

Soon you will see,
Between this place and harmony
I will sing my love loud
Between this place and success
I will make you proud
Between this place and happiness
I will cling to those things at which we smiled
because before this place and after
I am my Father’s child.

Those things that I have said and done
Those moments in which I have fought and run
fill neither the whole nor the heart of me.

I remember the things you’ve said and done
I remember those moments, every one
They mark my mind and the line is further blurred
so that you and I may be defined by a single word
such as love, blood, friend, or family
I know that you will forever shape the definition of me.
