The Martyr by Steven Craig
People have said that where there was no hope
I gave them hope.
When there was no Love,
I gave them Love.
When there was no tomorrow,
I gave them tomorrow.
When they were dying,
I walked with them to deaths door,
and held their hand a moment more.
When they had need,
I gave until the need was filled, or I was ruined.
When they were cold,
I gave them warmth.
When they were lonely,
I gave them my hand.
When they faced the storms fury,
I gave them shelter.
When they were running,
I gave them peace.
When they were losing,
I gave them victory.
When they were lost,
I showed them the way.
And when I was in Love,
I gave them forever and a day.
But then, it has never been enough.

Author's Note: We all have our moments, when we give everything in fruitless abandon.
That was from a time when I was 21, and the world I had come to know suddenly and forever changed.
I used to say that it ended, but that would have been much too simple, much too kind.
