08. gianicolo

by Peter Humphreys

the sun
is sending
long
enfolding
shadows
over lovers
on the wall
beneath the trees
on marble seats

the city is
basked
in clear
gentle
failing
light
as Tiber
flows
its green
lined path
from
Prati to
Trastevere

alone
a woman
a young woman
a dark woman
is distressed
she
stands
hopefully
hopingly
hopelessly
shouting
down
to the
gaol
below

this evening
as lovers
love
her grief
is intense
solitary
unexplained
unrelieved
anguished
without peer
as sun
sets upon
the gianicolo
hill

you've painted a vivid picture- i love the repetition of hope- describing the woman- i can see it

I love the contrast and the acknowledgement that when emotions are so strongly felt, it heightens all other emotions with them.
