Parting Love

by Trisha De Gracia

When the last tear slips
down into my palms
When the anger has subsided
When the pain in me abates
When your songs still ring
inside of my head
and your lyrics still warm me
with time-honoured pride that I have
for your mind
and your soul
When I take just a moment
breathe just a little
and watch you smile
just one genuine grin

I remember each poem I wrote just for us
I remember confusion, such grief
I remember the journals, the pages and pages of life
I remember the message, remember goodbyes
I remember the smell of your hair
and the sound of your voice
and the whispers and smiles that aren't void
just in light of their passing.

It's when I remember
that I truly know that
if only when I can
if only from some watching-place
if only when your situation's far too much to hold
you know I'm holding on to every promise

"always there"

somehow.
