Work

by Ben Evans

I'd like to take a proper job
Among the beggars and the thieves
I'd like to work and sweat and curse
And feel for ev'ry man who leaves.

I'd like to work a hardy job
And know, for what it's really worth,
how long it takes to build a bridge,
or house, or move eight tonnes of earth.

I'd like to work a grimy job
that others wouldn't choose to do,
I'd camp on moors or clean out bars
or tame the lions at London Zoo

I'd like to take a proper job
No, not for me the madding crowd
I'd like to work and sweat and win
For this; I'd like to make you proud
