The Turning Angel

by Delilah Coyne

She stands strong
looking down, watching over,
five small girls.
A stone book rests in her stone hands.
Stone wings poised,
ready to fly young souls
heavenward.
Long ago, she was sent to guard these little ones,
Lost too soon.
Grey eyes stare, unblinking, into endlessness.
They say she turns to watch as visitors come and go...
but her gaze is fixed as I pass by.
I am not her charge.
Her vigilance is unending, unnerving.

Author's Note: This monument is in the historic Natchez cemetery. There are many stories associated with her, but I've never seen her move.
