Lighthouse Grief

by Nicole Assenza

Oh, the awe
The spinning world inspires;
The world that everyone’s
A dizzy player on

I’m just discovering my
Vertebral columns
Shedding fear-skins all over
I voice a tinny tune
That’s banging off
In far off places
Going from butter to beautiful
The sun forgives me
Of all my great indoor sins
Sluices off the imagined maggots
But, don’t forget to bite

With the sunny prognosis,
For surgery without scars
There’s your lingering kindness
Of an unused scalpel
Cold and loved enough
To shock away time
And shake away faith
Of a reluctant outpatient
Whose black bird pie
Turned into baked Alaska
There’s a palm tree shadow
Somewhere
With her name on it

Try your hand at lighthouse grief
What thoughtful, searching tendrils
Burn away at the sunrise
That’s one more shipwreck
Dividing up attention
Extemporaneous trill
Yet the idea has merit
A melting candle of a voice
Goes on through the ages
Dripping memories all over

Oh, the awe
The spinning world inspires
The world that everyone’s
A dizzy player on

I’m just discovering my
Vertebral columns
