Upon this cliff

by Mae D Morey

The cliffs were black,

as a starless night

in a world with no moon

and the waves beat constant against

the humble fortress of stone

with all the fury

of a pent force.

and atop that battlement

I stood, the wind whipping about me fierce

cold and forsaken in my soul

looking out into the murky world

knowing in my heart that

my greatest gift to give

was life. Mine, that you might live.

and I had no moment granted me

to give reason for my course,

no instant to say my farewell,

no time at all since making my choice

and I gave my life

that you could live.
