The Best Friend by Mae D MoreyI followed you down the lonely roads
I asked for no explanations
and you offered no reasons or reassurances.
I knew you were sad
so I stayed by your side
and kissed your hand
to say
'I am here'
hoping that by being with you
I could make you less sad.
We walked along a dusty old road that day
and as we walked
you grew sadder yet.
In disbelief
I kissed away the tears you wept
and smiled my forgiveness
as to my head you placed
the cool end of a gun
and pulled the trigger
to end our rabbit hunts
and my old bones' pain, from arthritis. 12/15/2000 Posted on 04/25/2006 Copyright © 2025 Mae D Morey
