one

by Stephanie Kent

why do I plan with borrowed time?
watching the shadows move,
and thinking time flies at a crawl.
sometimes I feel as if I am able
to see past myself dimly,
like a glimpse of the stars through the clouds.
sometimes it hurts my eyes to see the truth,
besides, I've grown accustomed to my rosy lenses.
things are much simpler in the dark,
you feel, and smell, and taste, and hear.
but I'd rather shield my eyes from beauty
than live without the subtleties of color.
you know, I'd almost give my marrow
just to see you walking down the road towards me.
