The Attitude We Learn

by Meghan Helmich

Darling, I will not share the tension behind this tongue, nor
give you a reason to slide in between sweaty fingers.

(If you were

me,
your ears would pick up separate sounds.) Any
absence you may have noticed, any reason that
tonight could not continue as planned, well,
take that as a promise of future misunderstanding.

The genuine stare, my eyes on the wrinkles that
shade your speckled forehead, comes
from a place in me that is not so hidden.

The smirks you bestow, betrayals on
canvas. Proof, you cavalier lover, of my devotion –
and I will fall out of step (with) you
will

leave on dancer’s toes. You will leave
me, bequeath to me
the silence you have so practiced. The
white ending I have so accepted.

Author's Note: The assignment was to use each word from a song lyric as the first word of each line. I chose (The Child Is Gone - Fiona Apple).
