The Knot

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

“I have come with my mustard seed / I cannot accept that she would be taken from me” – Tori Amos, The Beekeper

You have come for her in the meadow
but I stand in the way.
You’ve tied her to the pole
in IV tubes
and she feels faint, weak
and can’t make me out
with my sword and breathing machine.

Promise me she will awake,
promise me all that’s at stake is
half a lung
and not her life.

Take me instead; tie my throat closed,
I will keep my eyes open
so she’ll see me smiling at her
from far away.
Take me instead; she’ll never know.
