Anne Sexton had a successful suicide attempt,
So did Sylvia Plath, as did Ernest hemingway.
The one that always catches my eye
Was John Kennedy Toole, wonder why?
In 1969 he parked his car in Biloxi
Mississippi, where he inhaled some exhaust fumes.
I guess that's okay, better than a shotgun
(And a whole lot less messier!)
Or even by sticking your head in an oven.
My own mother had an unsuccessful attempt
In her urbane committment to suicide.
Something about a butter knife and her wrists.
(Bolstered by a whole lot of Uncle Jack).
I'm just glad it was a committment she couldn't make,
Imagine the life lost for such a long-term mistake.
