Ostrich Reading Kerouac

by Julie Adams

An ostrich,
of sorts
walks onto the train,
his feathers
ruffle
knowing he stands out
in his own way—

a cocked hat
leans into his book,
reading Kerouac.
Revolutionary

army surplus jacket,
same green as his hat,
taming dreaded locks
beneath—

he steps in the train car,
braces, faces
reaction.
Stoic,

no salvaging sand
or sound.

A glance or two
peer quickly
returning
to books
and business
on Wall Street

it’s before eight a.m.
his feathers rescind
he appears disappointed

braces, faces reaction. Stoic, no salvaging sand or sound. hey, i saw that guy on the 1 train! so many solitary characters on the subway. i love how you colorfully you bring him off the page and into the mind with captivating image. enjoyable read. PK

I thought it said "Eating" too. O.o LoL.

People wander through life like solitary islands. I think this is a fresh metaphor.
