Across the Room

by Joe Cramer

From across the room
I saw her.
Her eyes lit up
And became downcast

All in one instant.
I would have danced
A thousand minuets
At her side.

She shimmered next to me
Bright-eyed and shining,
But not for me.
I saw her, from across the room

Smiling softly, not for me.
We walked into the night
Without so much as a fair-thee-well.
We parted, star-crossed nothing.
