I. A New Thing

by Christel Crews

The call was so late
I was half asleep but he sounded so excited
So, agreeing to meet up at the diner
I threw on some clothes and drove over to meet him

As I walked through the door, I glanced around
The place was nearly deserted
Yet there he sat with a grin on his face
Too amazing to pass up

I slid into the booth and smiled
It had been awhile
He smiled back and said,
"You look great, my dear"
That was all I needed to hear

We talked for hours,
though time seemed non-existant
I couldn't get enough of Him
And as I thought I should get home
He took my hand

"Before you go, I need to give you something"
He reached down to his side
And brough forth a box
No larger than his hands
It was white and seemed to shine

I shook my head,
"I don't deserve anything
Seeing you is enough
Talking with you is more than I could have wished for"

"Never the less" he said
With a twinkle in his eye..
That spark I had seen so long ago

"This is for you"
He slid the box across the table
It was too beautiful to describe
With a white satin bow that
Shimmered like liquid silver

I hesitated to touch it-
I would only taint it

He took my hand one more time
And smiled

I wanted to stay, lost in his gaze
It was his eyes, piercing my soul
Melting the ice that guarded my heart
I could feel it beating again

As I picked up the glistening box
I rose to go
The pain was gone
And I was holding something new
