MAN STRONG/WOMAN STRONGER

by Terry Olynik

Her impassioned response
To my casual question
Took me aback.
I had asked her
If she considered herself
A strong woman.
To which she
Immediately supplied
A litany of examples
To the affirmative -
Her refusal to tolerate
An idiot husband,
Her sole raising
Of two fine daughters,
Her completion,
Via nightschool,
Of her college degree,
And, as if
To put a point on it,
Her refusal that very day
To pay an unjust water bill.
"Yes, I am very much
A strong woman"
She assured me,
"What would possess you
To even ask
Such a question?"
She added testily.
"My washing machine died"
I explained,
"I need someone
To help me carry it
Out of the basement".
