ask yourself

by Ava Blu

I couldn’t see it,
dare I say I did try,
but there was always another something or other
in the way

so we laughed and I fought and I screamed
to get away from this addictive control {you have}
over me

somehow I kept letting it,
betting against another,
over take the mesh inside

so you asked me a cliché question
that everyone asks everyone else
because society never seems to mature:

do fairytales exist?

I could answer with the level of intelligence
you claim to possess

or I could give you the same clichéd answer
we buy into over and over;

I say the only fairy part of any tale
strives from our convictions we struggle against,

but when I dream, I take my shining knight
and turn my own tale into reality by believing in
the ability to mold our lives

so you laughed and I screamed against your shoulder
because this weakness in fairytales
claims a portion of my heart
that you keep fighting
against.
