Evening News

by Matthew Taylor

is it ever good? can it make you glad?
should be called all the news that's bad.
but we must watch, we must see,
the gory gore of murder and rape,
the sports too, the video tape!
they slip in a story of a good Samaritan
to balance it out....
but it never does!, my insides shout.
maybe we tune in just to see
the gorgeous newscasters,
and their beauty..
better and better looking they get
who cares what they say?
my mind now distracted, another media ploy.
is it the government? or just what actually happens?
tomorrow again, I'll click to the news,
get the blues,
how come they never show.....
Liz Cho's shoes? hmmmmmm?

I really liked this. Especially ending it with levity. I have been working in live local TV news for - gulp - 14 years now. I can tell you, DON'T WATCH IT! It is bad for your brain. And it is so true, at the end of the news cast, after 16 minutes of death, destruction, crime and tragedy, they stick a 2 minute "feel good" story on the end. Trying to not be all bad news, but it never balances it out. Your poem pleasantly summarizes what I observe and preach. Nice job.

I so could have written this... well other than the Liz Cho part... but I'm a shoe girl and will have to check it out when I'm in Cresskill next week... I'll ask my brother's "guy" input; most likely the same. Really though - great perceptive look at is handed to us as news on a daily basis. ~N
