I did not greet the morning

by Alison McKenzie

The sun rose Saturday morning,
Crept under my eyelids,
Seeped into my dreamtime.

It was the beginning of a lazy day.

You shook me up somehow,
Made me aware
Of smells, flavors, truth.
But I didn’t shower.
I lay, there, in the languid residue -
You and I mingling,
Lingering in dance

The thought of you
Caressed my depth,
A mirage in a long string of fantasies
Bound together -
Slipknots of time -
Until my breathing grew shallow,
My heart, feint.

Wake me swiftly up!

I see no light to guide me
Here
In this moment
No man follows.
No man touches.
No man shakes me.
No man owns me.

I spent many years in that dream
Only to dissolve
Like a breath of pre dawn mist
Before the next sun.
