Hospitality

by Susan Q Tomas

Up north there are welcome mats in front of locked doors.

Down south, there are open doors and people sitting on porches.

They don't have much, but what they do have, gladly share with you.

"Vengas . . . tomas un poco de café y el pan dulce!"

They are poor in amenities, but rich with hospitality.

Author's Note: On my trip to La Ceiba Honduras, the flight from Dallas to Miami was longer than the flight from Miami to San Padre, Honduras. But the shorter flight seemed like a bridge to a far distant culture. I will probably be adding on to this. It is kind of a work in progress.

I always have a little difficulty with the online translation sites. "Come. . . coffee takings a little and the sweet bread" but I get the idea.... I think thanks for your thoughts, waiting to see how this develops

Susan, this is something I learned this year when I tutored the children of Hispanic families. Their lives are so totally different than the one I know. It was an education in love and togetherness. I think I came away with more wisdom and warmth than I have felt in a long time. Thank you for putting into words what took me a long time to learn.
