Bright Star

by Meredith C Hartwell

You were brilliant once,
and strong.
Your eyes were mirrors to my own,
reflecting back:
I've never known anyone so beautiful.
Arms around me, promising safety,
union, permanence.
Your voice, a mantra,
chanting This is it. The one. This is it.

That was it.

Your eyes are windows now,
open, and letting in the cold.
Arms empty: you are a liar.

You don't shine like you used to.

And how far fallen... what a sense of loss. I demand more poems now.
