the river

by Peter Humphreys

the river
surged
mightily
lethally
beside
along the
mud strewn
path we
strode
word on word
thought on thought
eye glancing eye
smiling
inwardly
the trusting
grew

a bitter wind
a greying dusk
below the bluff
across the swell
the slender ferry
strived
to control
its swerving
swinging path
together
we watched
it struggle
in awe

our hands touched

an embrace

a kiss

a beginning

Wonderful cadence in this poem, Peter. Earthy, of the stuff where roots take hold, and your images are grand. A work, full of hope!

That you could smile and embrace regardless of the storm... this is beauty, indeed.
