it was just a joke

by Barbara Griffith

Did you hear the one
about the alcoholic..?

Yeah, acually, I did.

I heard the one about
the alcoholic who went out
for milk
and came home four hours later
to his children gone
and the remains on their sad little
elbow noodle and butter dinner
sitting on the kitchen counter.

I heard the one about
the alcoholic who drank
and drank and drank
and couldn't stay sober
long enough to make it to
his little girls
graduation day.

I heard the one about
the alcoholic with the
alcoholic father.
The one who choked to death
on his own vomit.

And of course, I heard the one
about the alcoholic who
ruined his own life,
and left large red scars
on the life of everyone else.
