Within Without by Julie AdamsA marksman
wanders
like the poor
through wasteland
observing moral law
beneath twinkling skies
seeing beyond
Kant,
himself,
their awes,
into the eye
of man—kind,
a triumph
not without heart,
feeling
reaching
beyond self
beyond dividing walls
to where wonders come in
threes,
and even those without
have dreams
pumping
within

Inspired by: The Third Wonder, by Edwin Markham , which reads as follows--
'Two things,' said Kant, 'fill me with breathless awe/
The starry heavens and the moral law.'/
I know a thing more aweful and obscure--/
The long, long patience of the plundered poor.

Posted by Jim Benz on 02/16/06 at 01:13 AM rough but vital. this is a lovely, meaningful poem and I like the quote that inspired it. going directly to Kant can be interesting too. I've done that more than once. now, where's the tanka I was looking for? |
