Crow

by Julie Adams

D train
foreboding words
8:27 a.m.--

'The crow is coming'
scrawled in purple permanent
marker on mirrored metal
has me reflecting--

flashes of Hitchcock,
brings brooding
birds to mind

such flavored pictures, poetical
exact detailed tapestry
of edits and perfections
like confectionaries

someone taps, impatient
their nail against steel
in light fevered taps

I snap from the scene
upstairs
into my own again
and hungry

the crow soars from my mind
I ascend into the stairwell
looking up to the trees,
not quite sure why
