Practicalities

by Richard Vince

May you find the happiness that
I wished I could have given you
But knew I never could.

This, I suppose, is the wonder
Of Hindsight: discoveries and
Realisations that come to me
Now that I am happy, but
That I could really have used
To calm the torrent of words
Flowing from me, or to sing me
Gently to sleep.

This feeling of gladness that I
Never wasted your time does
Little to temper the regret
For hastily expressed bitterness.
I should have learned from
Last time, really.

So many times I have cursed
Practicalities, but now it seems
They were our saviours
All along. Those miles of
Unfamiliar country served as
A cushion to the fall we
Managed to avoid.

I am thankful for your role
As the best muse I ever had,
But I am even more thankful
That I can still occasionally
Welcome you into my life and
Be welcomed into yours.

May you find the happiness that
I wished I could have given you
But knew I never could.

...and in between the first and last stanzas are some pretty wonderful lines, too. I like the positive spin here...with a mere whiff of melancholy. Well done, Richard.
