Summer Sausage Sandwich

by Lisa Marie Brodsky

His favorite visitor was the snack cart girl
who pulled cookies, pretzels, apple and
strawberry-banana-kiwi juice on a cart
behind her.
Sometimes she’d made summer sausage
sandwiches with just a small piece
of cheddar in between 2 Ritz crackers.
He liked that with lemonade; it reminded
him of hickory smoke and barbecues, of
kids playing tag, running in and out of his legs.
The kiwi juice reminded him of her
for he had never had it before.
Her sitting on the edge of his bed
dressed in a spotted white apron,
all smiles and promises.
