Time thief

by Robin Patterson

I stare in the darkness
at pieces of numbers
glaring in red
a haunting reminder
that our
time together
must end

I see your breathing
peaceful, content
pull myself closer
with aching regret
that I must
wake you
to leave

I kiss your lips
softly you stir
to kiss me back
wetness falls
from eyes
knowing
it's over

Strong arms
hold close
making it harder
to tear away
where once
I felt safe
now abandoned

What was never
meant to be
has happened
and what we've
started, now
we can not
finish

For the red
glaring numbers
call out your name
showing no mercy
as if hoping
to expose
our secret

And we think time
is playing the thief
but she is
only taking
back what was
never really
ours

So you leave
in the night
and I wish time
would follow,
but it simply
stands still in
my heart
