In 20 Years

by Trisha De Gracia

The sweetness of these grapevine years
defined inside of lies with sugared faces:
making opportunity outside of nothing,
making something, making up
so we can laugh in twenty years
in March, or maybe it was May
and talk about the kids
careers and simple things like how
to grow outstanding roses or
to master cheese souffle.

Then maybe we could laugh towards the ceiling
lift our chins and chuckle airily
the way we used to stare into the rainclouds
hoping only to coerce our tears,
to trick them into sliding down
some other person's face.
I'd dab demurely at mouth corners
half forgetting where I was
or just who I was sitting with,
you'd slide a steel fork in between you lips
and thank the waiter while I think
"who's gonna pay the bill
this time."

Beautiful piece Trisha. Gives me a sense of "future nostalgia"...wonderful effect. End line returns me to the present. Well penned. Thanks.
