holding on until we're too far gone

by Rebecca Lin

We weren't faking it,
we just didn't know anything else.
I knew something was
different,
but I wasn't sure if... no,
the must have known.

Did we lose our flare?
The spark was once there.
We still talk about having big
adventures,
having road trips in South America,
being crazy old women,
becoming every single thing
we ever once dreamed we could be.

The truth is,
we are not growing apart.
We're all just changing
and trying to hold on to
sensations of what was,
what used to be.

I see
the clutching grasp of security,
us holding on until
we're too far gone,
then we'll go our separate
ways.

And if we ever reminisce
or return to that rocky beach
to look back at the island
that nurtured us
and destroyed us at the same time,
we'll say
"We were the girls that longed to escape each day."
